This post is mainly intended for he who shall not be named (you know who you are).
The slogan PARENT'S RIGHTS!! is often shown at the end of certain posts on this forum. For once, I agree!!!!! I think it is a patent’s right to be held accountable if they don’t teach their children basic common truths and courtesies. Otherwise, how will children ever grow up to live in a world where society measures them in their actions? It should not be solely the responsibility of the school system to teach things like:
- It's wrong to disrespect or make fun of those who are disabled and/or less fortunate than yourself.
- It’s wrong to measure a person’s worth based on the color of their skin or their religious beliefs.
- It’s wrong to bully and harass someone just because they may not wear what you think is the right clothes or subscribe to the same customs as you.
- It’s wrong to disrespect your teachers or any elders.
- It’s wrong to threaten, or even use, a weapon to scare or hurt another person.
- It is wrong to demean another’s religious beliefs or how they may have been persecuted in the past.
As of June of 2022, laws mandating education in the Holocaust were on the books in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Likewise, twenty-three states in America have laws mandating the teaching of the Holocaust, including Florida [1994 F.S. 1003.4(2)(g)] and Arizona (2021 HB 2241). Maybe parents should reinforce this education at home.
Likewise, it is the parents’ right, and their responsibility, to teach their children that there have been times in America when it was generally acceptable to treat certain groups of people differently, and not for the better. Of course, if the parents have never been taught these lessons, or worse, they have but just don’t care, how are these kids ever going to learn that their behavior today will determine what sort of person they will be when they grow up and take their place in society? I wonder if those who complain about the behavior of today’s college students believe their parents bear any responsibility for their actions.
The current far right thinking seems to be that it is okay for teachers to be ostracized and even be punished if they attempt to teach these principles in the classroom. But if parents aren’t held accountable to teach their kids the right behavior, and if educators aren’t allowed to teach our kids these basic human principles when they directly observe them being violated, then how are the kids ever going to learn? Maybe we should put a camera in every classroom and when Johnny or Suzie demonstrates behavior that the teacher believes needs to be corrected the parents must come to the school, watch the video, and explain to the school administers what they are going to do to correct the situation.
The reason I have been thinking about this, and thus this post, is what has recently occurred with the fifteen-year-old boy who was given multiple life sentences for the murder of several schoolmates. The state of Michigan has also charged his parents with aiding and abetting his behavior by allowing him to buy a gun before he was legally allowed to do so. While drastic, I for one believe it is these parent’s right to be held actionable for their behavior.
So again, may I suggest the bumper sticker PARENT'S RIGHTS!! be modified. Perhaps it should be:
PARENT’S RIGHT TO TEACH THEIR KIDS PROPER BEHAVIOR!!
