Quotes attributed to Adolph Hitler:
"I will get rid of the 'communist' 'vermin',"
"I will take care of the 'enemy within',"
"Jews and migrants are poisoning Aryan blood.”
"One people, one realm, one leader."
Quotes attributed to Donal J. Trump:
"I will get rid of the communist vermin."
"I will take care of the threat from within.”
"Migrants are 'poisoning the blood of our country.'"
"'One people, one family, one glorious nation."
In a recent campaign speech in Massachusetts Trump said he has never read Main Kampf, and I believe him. In fact, I doubt if he has ever read an entire book in his life, not even The Art of the Deal which he paid Tony Schwartz to write. But in the same speech Trump went on to say Hitler didn’t mean what he said in the same way as he did, so he admitted to at least having knowledge of the sort of antisemitic rhetoric used by Hitler. If so, one might wonder why he would decide to use the same sort of language and run the risk of being criticized.
It is easy to understand why Trump made those comments. First, he was simply reading off a teleprompter the words written for him by Stephen Miller, his top advisor, speech writer, and a known white supremist. It was Miller who was the architect of Trump’s “No Muslims Allowed” policy and It was also Miller who wrote the speech Trump gave on January 6, 2021, just prior to the attack on the Capital.
Second, Trump knows his audience very well and has honed the art of getting them riled up. Just as Hitler was able to stir the fires in the hearts of German citizenry in the 1920s and 30s who were lamenting their losses in WWI, Trump goes out of his way to work up the 25% of Americans who still think George Wallace should have been elected president and believe the 2020 election was stolen, regardless of what the courts say. He vehemently wants to be seen as the great uniter while at the same time going out of his way to be the great divider.
Trump often makes comments that are so outlandish that they are scary. Afterwards the news media outlets ask other republicans what they think about what he said and they either dance around it without answering it at all, or they laugh and say he really didn’t mean it and was just joking. “I’ll be a dictator on day one,” is just one such comment that comes to mind. The problem is, there are numerous examples that show he means exactly what he says. It is no secret he greatly admires authoritarian leaders and has even said he wished he had their power, and when (if?) reelected in 2024 he would totally revamp the executive branch and assume many of the powers other dictators wield. Remember, these are the same goals Hitler had before he took over Germany from Keiser Wilhelm.
So, excuse me if I believe Trump would love to follow in Hitler’s footsteps. I just don’t want to be like the frog in a pan of water being heated to a boil. I prefer we put out the flame before we all regret our inaction.
Heil Trump
