Mary Powers (Evans)

Since U.S. financial condition will be in the news next week with the November 17th funding deadline looming, here is an interesting quiz on balancing the budget.

How Would You Balance the Budget? | George W. Bush Presidential Center (bushcenter.org)

It may not be current, and there are other factors besides spending and revenue, but you'll get the idea on how difficult it would be to get to total fiscal control.  I did not do well on the quiz, even selecting both spending reductions and tax increases.

If the internet information is correct, the last time revenue was equal to or exceeded spending was 2001, with 1998-2000 having a surplus.  There have been both Republican and Democratic administrations and Congress since then, and some major events (e.g., 9/11 and pandemic), so this post is not to elicit a blame game, but to demonstrate the complexity of it.  Now if only Congress would work together on it....

Google:  The Folds in the American Flag      Another GREAT thing about a "Small Town".  This morning the 8th Graders put on a Veterans Day Breakfast.  It was extremely emotional.  There was a program that included the Kids and the American Legion.  One of the attendees was the Mother of a young Man who lost his life in Iraq.  The American Legion took an American Flag and folded it for her (you've probably heard the expression, "Folds of Honor") and explained what each of the folds meant.  a Marine Major then carried the Flag to the Gold Star Mother who was seated on the Stage, knealt on one knee, and presented the Flag to her.  I don't know if there was a dry eye in the auditorium?  Certainly not mine!!  Hi Mary--instead of the Republicans and Democrats going to the trough and asking for more pork in the budgeting process they should each figure out something's they can cut.  Then they should be required to cut it.  It can happen.  Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, two opposite bookends did it.  Our Government was threatened with another downgrade today because of the debt.  Cell Phone--my price on my first one was $0.  The Company decided they needed to have access to me for 24 hours.  The good news was that the battery life was pretty short.

According to one article I read, it is not only the current amount of debt, but also that polarization in Congress raises the risk that present and future governments won't be able to come up with a consensus on a fiscal plan, unlike with Clinton and Gingrich as Frank notes.

A friend sent this to me.  It's a Beatles song that was unknowingly dedicated to Mr. Biden in 1965.  I give you just a taste of Nowhere Man:

"He's a real nowhere man

Sitting in his nowhere land

Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

Doesn't have a point of view

Knows not where he's going to".........

Well.....you get it.  Actually, I think he's looking for his banjo and that front porch in Deliverance.  So sad.

Mike L.,

Exactly as I described !! I purchased that phone, as others, through the ' International Fire Fighters Association '. We have our accounts through Apple. We now, receive one new phone per year, if we so decide to. How's that for my memory ?...Enough said.......

A THANK YOU TO ALL MILITARY VETERANS WHO HAVE SERVED, AND THOSE CURRENTLY SERVING NOW. YOU HELP KEEP US FREE. THE MILITARY HAS BEEN AND CONTINUES TO BE THE STANDARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE LEARNING INDEPENDENCE THROUGH DISCIPLINE, AND SACRIFICE, OPENING UP NEW PATHS NOT  EVER IMAGINED WITHOUT MILITARY SERVICE AS A FOUNDATION.

GOD BLESS AMERICA.

COATS AND DEWITT  YOUR POSTS 11561 AND 11562 ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY.

AS TO THE POSSIBILITY OF A LONG TERM BATTERY TO BE USABLE IN ACTUALLY MAKING ELECTRIC VEHICLES PRACTIBLE FOR PROLONGED USAGE. (OVER 500 MILES) MUSK'S OWN EMPLOYEE NO. 6 WAS ALLEGEDLY SUPPOSED TO HAVE INVENTED A VERY LIGHT WEIGHT BATTERY, THAT WOULD HOLD A TREMENDOUS LENGTH OF ELECTICAL ENERGY STORAGE, FOR MANY HOURS. THIS IS SOMETHING I READ ABOUT APPROXIMATELY 4 YEARS AGO. THERE WAS MUCH ENTHUSIASM ABOUT THIS BATTERY BUT JUST AS SUDDENLY THE NEWS ABOUT THIS BATTERY SEEMS TO HAVE DISAPPEARED.

I KNOW THERE WAS A FELLOW WHO INVENTED A LONG TERM STORAGE BATTERY WHO WAS FROM TUCSON ARIZONA. IT WAS MADE OF FABRIC IMPREGNATED WITH METALLIC DUST THAT MADE IT LIGHT WEIGHT, AND CAPABLE OF TREMENDOUS STORAGE OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO IT'S CONTINUED VIABILITY EITHER.

YOU KNOW, OF COURSE, IF YOUR CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYER IS STILL USING A FLIP PHONE TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIS OFFICE, AND CLIENTS, THEN YOU BETTER PLAN ON APPEALING THE DECISION IN YOUR JURY TRIAL.

IF YOU ALL HAD NOT INSISTED ON VEHICLES RATHER THAN GOOD OLD RELIABLE CABALLOS YOU WOULD NOT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERIES, AND CHARGING STATIONS. WE WOULD NOT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT WHETHER VEHICLES WOULD TRAVERSE 250 VERSUS 500 MILES OR MORE, GOOD OLD CABALLOS WOULD TRAVEL 70 MILES A DAY MAX, AND THEN YOU WOULD HAVE TO FEED AND WATER THEM FOR THE DAY. YOUR MINDS WOULD BE AT REST, YOU WOULDN;T HAVE TO WORRY INCESSANTLY LIKE LORTS DOES ABOUT???????? WHATEVER.

YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CALL A WOMAN WITH ONE LEG SHORTER THAN THE OTHER?  ILENE!

YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CALL A WOMAN WITH ONE LEG SHORTER THAT THE OTHER FROM JAPAN? IRENE!

OMG, I stand corrected on the cost of early cell phones. I did not realize that some companies and organizations offered cell phones to their employees for next to nothing. I based my statement on actual prices that friends of mine paid. Not me, I could not fit that cost into my budget.

My overall point was how much cell phones have evolved and how alternative energy and EV's will evolve as well. I guess that's why I'm proud to be called a "progressive".

Nancy Nicoll writes,

To all of you who served in the US military, I send a heartfelt "THANK YOU".  Freedom isn't free, and you are so very appreciated for your service to all of us!  HAPPY VETERANS DAY!!

BTW, our grandson Toby, is still loving bootcamp and will be graduating in 3 weeks.  Rich and I plan to go see his graduation.  He was called on to be a PLatoon leader, for which we weren't surprised, but very proud!!  I sent him all the comments from many of you on this site.  Thanks again for everything!

11/11/23 08:51 PM #11459

Jim Coats

Nancy.  Please tell Toby congratulations for his outstanding performance.

If Boot Camp is anything like it was in the "olden" days (in 1967), there was a Platoon of around 80 "Boots", and usually each Platoon has 4 Squads.  Then, Toby would be a Squad Leader because of outstanding performance and he may very well receive his first promotion (to Private First Class) at graduation, again, if it's like the "olden" days.

At any rate, he has been recognized as a leader and you are right to be proud of him.  Wait until the first time he is officially called a Marine...at graduation.  That's really something.

SEMPER FI!

Hi Jim, Toby is in the Army but I think their boot camps are structured very similar to the Marines except I think they all get their first stripe at graduation.

Sunday Funnies-- 1. Surgeon to Patient in hospital bed, "Sorry about the two scars.  We had the x-Ray upside down at first!"  2. I remember being able to get up without my body making all kinds of noise.  The good old days.  3. If you want your neighbors to pay for a Privacy Fence just do Yoga naked in the backyard.  4. I took my Wife to the Office Christmas Party a few years ago after I started a new job and she didn't know anyone.  A guy came up and said, "You must be Franks Wife."  She turned to me and asked, "You have a Wife?"  You should have seen his face.  5.  If Common Sense was Lard, a lot of people couldn't even grease a pan.  6. The girls were great when we were young.  No nose rings, no tattoos, no torn jeans, and no pink hair!

Nancy:  Whoops!  Brain fart.  I had it in mind that Toby was in the Marines.  Good catch Frank and BTW Nancy, everything I said about the honor of being named a leader in Basic Training (Boot Camp to us) applies.  No matter what, Toby has a GOOD start.  Sounds like he's a man to be reckoned with.

P.S.  Nancy.  I think I told you my son is career Army.

Hey guys and gal's. You may or may not have missed me on our message board. It's certainly not for any good reason that I've not responded or interacted for sometime, but I've been traveling for some time and it took.me a while to discover that my email was somewhat corrupted to the point that I was unaware of what was actually happening. Nevertheless, I think I fixed the issue as I am able to read all your posts. Barb and I just completed a two month RV trip to the East and Southeast. Glad to be home after a 7000 mile trip. And, let me add a heartfelt and deserved thank you for your service to all who have serve are are serving this country. Happy Veterans Day. For it is you who have made it possible for us to live in freedom, notwithstanding those on the left wh are trying their best to minimise our First Amendment rights everyday.

Greg!!  Glad to see you back!  IF you get time, please give us some info on where you have been.  If we did something like that, we'd head N/W into CO, WY, MT and SD....staying away from "The Blue."  I need to live vicariously through you!

Did/do you rent or own your motorhome?  Basically, I'm looking for what it is and the size, etc.  The Dutchess and I have passively considered an RV trip due to our hound and needing to find accommodations that would take him.  I'm pretty much done with flying.

Great Veterans Day to all. Was able to enjoy the many "Free gifts for Vets". Starting on Friday morning Dennys' gave you a "Grand Slam" (2 eggs, meat & pancakes) which carried over to Saturday also. Then to Freddys for a Burger coupon good for the rest of Nov. Human Bean for a large Coffee, Next was Applebees for a Pasta lunch, Great Clips for a Pro Trim, Little Caesars for a box pizza to go. Golden Corral both Sat & Sun, Red Robin's Big Tavern Burger (3/4s went to a takeaway container for Tuesday). Got a Voncher from Red Lobster good till end of year. Buffalo Wild Wings for a 10pc plate, with a stop at Black Bear for their big burger (which both now sits on the top shelf of our refrigerator). Always got a beer or drink, tipped on the total. Finished Sat nite at Firebirds in Tempe for their New York Strip [buy 2 meals, one goes free]. Dave and Buster's  had their Vet Meal both Sat & Sun. As an interesting observation, there were many Vets at these places, and many sure went out of their way to shake a follow Vets hand. It was a fun packed weekend to get out and show your colors.

As a comment to DeWitt, need to add to your #11590 "Space Force".

Jim, my wife and I having previously sold our 40 foot class A RV a couple of years ago because we just were not using it, borrowed my niece's 30 foot class C. We were gone for two months traveling throughout the SE. We decided to do this because of a niece and nephew weddings that were 30 days apart. So we headed East for the first wedding (9/23) on 9/15 visiting a number of sites like The Biltmore, The Antietam Civil War memorial battlefield and cemetery, and Williamsburg. We made stops at other historical areas. We also had opportunities to visit friends in Florida and KY. We were appreciative of sleeping in a guest room. The Class C RV were were driving is a bit crowded to live in. BTW, we pulled our Jeep during the trip. After the second wedding (10/21), we headed to our daughter's home in Michigan City, IN. The main issue we have with an RV trip like this, is the amount of driving and associated miles we experienced. These RV'S whether a 30 ft class C or 40 ft Class A diesel pulling a Jeep are gas hogs. You will spend hundreds of dollars for gas or diesel. Cost of renting these RV's is expensive. If one plans on spending extended periods of time, you really want a larger Class A or large 5th wheel trailer. My wife doesn't drive the RV's we had. So I did it all. Just be prepared for dealing with heavy traffic, weather and wind, and long drives each day just to get there. We averaged 300+ miles per day before we reached our next RV Park. Many of our daily stops were just one night. The things were saw and places we visited were fantastic and we probably would not have experienced unless we were driving. Oh and the fall colors in the Smoky Mts were beautiful. But I think we have had our fill of RVing over the last 10 years. Now our travel will consist of airplanes, car rentals and hotels with the occasional stay at friends or relative's homes. RVing can be fun by taking you to places in multiple states. You just have to do it to see if that fits your travel lifestyle.

Jim Coats

Greg.  Sounds like a great trip, although it wore you out from time to time.  I think RV'ing is not for us, but I'm glad you had the opportunity.

The Great Smokey Mountains ARE beautiful.  When I lived in SC (going sophmore year to U of So. Carolina in '66, '67), my folks and I drove from Camden, SC (close to Columbia) in a pickup with a cabover camper and a dog.  We were all young then and bulletproof.  Drove thru Cherokee, NC up to Gatlinburg, TN and then turned around.  Great time.  I had never seen bears in such quantities in my life!  Someday I'll relate my "near death experience" with a black bear by the highway.  Quite a tale.

Jim,

Black bears are just big puppy dogs ! They run like hell, when you holler at them. Now lions, are a complete different story. I have been trailed and stalked several times in my hunting life, makes your hair stand straight up, believe me............

This is a "Walt Disney True Life Adventure."  Remember those on TV?

Sometime in late '66 or early '67, my folks and I took a drive up through the Great Smokey Mountains.  As we were driving, we saw a bunch of cars pulled off the road to the right.  We correctly guessed they were looking at some sort of wildlife.  Soooo, we pulled over and I got out with my new, self-winding (film advancing) Kodak camera.  Sure enough, there was a black bear chomping on food thrown by the tourists.

Of course, I wanted a picture and looked through the view finder of my brand new self winding (film advancing) Kodak camera.  Some of you may recall that looking through those view finders made things look far away.  This fact is germane to the story.

I calmly crept closer and closer to the bear (he still looked far away) and took a picture, thereby triggering the self-winding (film advancing) feature of the camera.  I admit, it was quite noisy.  Well, the bear looked up at me and headed for me at a trot.  I took the camera down from my eye and quickly determined the bear was waaaay closer than I thought.  In my 76 year old memory, he was about 15' away.

Being 19 years old and in peak physical condition, I literally "river danced" away from the bear and around a car at which time, he halted his "murderous pursuit"smiley and went back to his food.  I was a little shaken, but I received a considerable amount of applause from our fellow gawkers and some asked me to do it again so they could get more pictures.  I did not.  The End.

P.S.  This was meant to be humorous, even though true.

Try as I may, I cannot find any government statistics on the total amount of illegal drugs coming across our southern border. But there are tons of government statistics on how much, usually in pounds, of illegal drugs that are stopped from crossing the border. I find it very interesting that 96% of all the drugs stopped are at secured boarder crossings and only 4% are found on people crossing into the USA along less secured parts of the border.

Another interesting government statistics is that over 93% of all drugs stopped at secured border crossings are found in vehicles registered to American companies and/or American citizens, and that over 86% of the drivers of those vehicles are American citizens.

As for what sort of drugs are being brought across the southern border, it is mostly marijuana and methamphetamine and both of those have dropped significantly in the past three years.  Between cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin it is mostly cocaine then fentanyl far behind and heroin almost nonexistent anymore. I suspect that’s because fentanyl is cheaper to make than heroin and more addictive.

Yes, the USA needs to hit China, the main supplier of the cursory drugs for fentanyl, with heavy sanctions. But let’s not fool ourselves, if we make China feel pain the source of the chemicals will simply move to another country. No, we are not going to invade Mexico to wipe out the drug cartels and strain our relations with Mexico. But we can give Mexico incentives to form joint task forces that may help put a dent into the supply side.  How about doctors and pharmacies? The CDC says over 50% of all fentanyl deaths are people misusing prescribed opioids with fentanyl. Should the US medical industry be held accountable too?

Also, what should be done about the demand side? What should happen to companies whose trucks are found to be carrying illegal drugs, or for that matter, American citizens caught smuggling illegal drugs across the border? Can we pass laws that put company executives of these trucking companies in prison should their vehicles be caught carrying illegal drugs? Or should American citizens caught smuggling drugs from Mexico go to jail and automatically loose the vehicle they are using and any personal assets they may own that are equivalent to the value of the drugs? And, what about the users of illegal drugs. Are they to be considered a part of the problem? Is there a way their issues can be addressed that would make it unnecessary for them to seek out drugs of an unknown origin? Holland has government run clinics where their citizens can obtain free pain killing and mind-altering drugs if they are used on site. And should the user decide they want to kick the habit free programs are available to wean them off the addictive drugs and, if available, onto non-addictive drugs.

Some of you like to end your posts with the bumper sticker slogan “Follow the Money”. So why doesn’t congress pass a bill funding enough employees of existing government agencies whose specific task is to go after the money. It seems to me that is what the House and Senate should be doing and not simply throwing barbs at the Executive Branch. It’s call bi-partisan politics and we need more of it.

By the way, you should check out the rapidly rising statistics of the quantity of illegal drugs coming across the Canadian border.  Maybe Florida and Texas should send their national guards north.

While the exact date varies by who’s reporting (UN, CDC, etc.), it is generally agreed that we recently passed the 8,000,000,000 (eight billion) milestone of living souls on good old planet earth.  The causes of this increase vary, but people having more children is not one of them. It requires 2.1 births per couple just to maintain a stable population and it is estimated worldwide births are running around 1.6 per couple. Of the three largest countries by population, India, China, and the USA, both China (1.1) and the USA (1.3) have the lowest birth rates, and while India still runs at a rate slightly over 2.1 it is estimated this is beginning to drop and will do so rapidly as China’s work force shrinks and Indian families become more affluent.

People all over the world are living longer and infant mortality is dropping, both of which are the main reasons the worldwide population continues to grow, albeit at a slower rate than it has over the past half century or so. But there is another very interesting statistic that doesn’t get much attention – fewer people are dying due to wars, murder, and other people-on-people deaths. In fact, when it comes to killing one another, we are currently living in one of the safest eras since records have been kept. This statistic doesn’t mean much if you currently live in Ukraine or Gaza, or if you live on a block in a crime ridden, gang-controlled US city, but overall, it is encouraging.

The Social Security Administration estimates that without a continued influx of working age employees, by 2050 there will not be sufficient able-bodied US employees paying into the SS fund to pay those already retired or retiring in the next twenty-five years. They also publish reports that say either the amount of money paid into the fund needs to rise, or more workers need to be added to US payrolls. If the cap on earnings taxed by social security were to be raised from today’s first $137,000 per person to $500,000 per person, both social security and Medicare would be funded for another fifty years. And their figures show if the population of working-class people in the USA were to increase by 5 –6 million over the next few years the SS fund would be set for the next century. If US citizens aren’t having enough babies, where do you suppose we could get a boost to the population?

So, if you are someone who believes “I got mine and to hell with everyone else”, then you’re all set, and nothing needs to be done. But, if you have kids, grandkids, or even great grand kids, and you would like for them to have a safety net in their retirement, then I suggest you contact your Senators and Congress people and tell them to quit fighting over how the chairs on the deck of the Titanic should have been positioned and work together to do their jobs.
