The Media has a repetitive quality that begins to irritate, because of the indifference displayed to REAL FACTS. As an example the Fiction that "AR-15" stands for Automatic Rifle, and is a deadly weapon used only by the Military, and therefore no upright proponent of the Second Amendment should, or would own one legally, aside from using it for hunting. Such Media examples are numerous, even the current President indulges himself in this Fiction. Geraldo Rivera also pounds the pulpit about how outrageous that it is that any gun owner would own one, let alone advocate for the possession of such a weapon. So if you are REALLY INTERESTED AND NOT ENGAGING IN REPEATING INACCURACIES THEN HERE ARE SOME FACTS.
First, the AR in AR-15, stands for the manufacturer of the AR-15 Rifle, and AR stands for Armalite Corporation, which manufacturers the Armalite Rifle, Model 15. The rifle is not an Automatic Weapon, no rifle manufactured and deemed legal to sell to the American Public, is manufactured to be considered Automatic. "Automatic" means that the firearm, which is wnat rifles, pistols, shotguns, revolvers, and powder one shot rifles, are called, are not legally sold in the United States to the Civilian Population since the Congress passed a Law in I believe 1938, shortly after the Gangster Al Capone slaughtered people in Chicago, Illinois using what was called a "Tommy Gun" which was an Automatic Weapon.
Since that Legislation was passed, it has not been legal to own an Automatic Rifle or Pistol in the USA unless you have been issued a Special License to own an Automatic Weapon. Automatic means that with one pull of the Trigger one can fire multiple rounds from the same weapon. We don't have legal Automatic Weapons disseminated amongst the General Population so almost every weapon used in the commission of any Crime is only a Semi-Automatic weapon. Of course, in a Free Country, there will inevitably be the Criminal element, the insane, and Sociopathic who will take a Semi-Automatic weapon and work to modify it to make it fully Automatic, but these individuals are less than one percent of the total population if you draw your Pool of Individuals from American Citizens, but the percentage will probably increase with the number of illegal entrants into the USA since President Biden chose to make the Southern Border into to the Welcome Wagon.
The AR-15 uses the same Caliber round as the Restricted to Use by the Military M-16. This round is the .223 caliber round, and for a round is effective for use on Deer but not much else larger in size as a Game Animal. This round in the Military is designated as the 5.56 mm round but is the same as the .223 caliber and has the same ballistics. If you are interested Google can educate you on what the AR means in AR-15, and what the .223 caliber round compares to in NATO designation.
It is true that the AR-15 bears a remarkable resenblance to the M-16 but close examination of both shows that there are differences which are significant. The most significant is that the M-16 could be switched to fully Automatic while the AR-15 cannot be, unless mechanical changes are made to the AR-15 that render it thereafter illegal to own by a US Citizen.
I am not as tolerant of the Media's inaccuracies as some might be, for propaganda is effective when repetition makes wnat is clearly in the beginning recognized as Untruth, and by repetition the Untruth through disuse, or deliberate misuse, is no longer recognized. The Media has never clearly defined what the word "Assault" means in their Vocabulary, it is a nebulous quality, given a very Negative Reference to every Firearm used to commit a Crime nowadays. As I sit here writing this on a Sunday morning the News is narrating the current findings about the shootings in Monterrey Park, Ca. but when it came to a description of the Weapon used, although a person of interest has been apprehended, no mention of an "Assault Weaponl" has been made, although one Law Enforcement expert/Officer was asked if an Assault Weapon was used, Kamala Harris did make reference to "Gun Violence" which focuses on an Inanimate object instead of the "person of interest" that may have used the weapon to commit at least 10 murders to date. I see the Media as desiring to minimize the role of the Criminal in such incidents, and rather to focus what some in this Country want to prohibit GUN OWNERSHIP AND USE. THE BEST WAY TO DO SO IS TO ENGAGE IN DELIBERATE MISLEADING OF THE PUBLIC FROM RECOGNITION OF TRUTH TO INSTEAD POLITICIZE SITUATIONS SO THAT INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS CAN BE TAKEN AWAY. In one sense, every thing one can pick up in their hand and can be, or is used as such,, is an "Assault Weapon" In Chinatown here in Los Angeles, Ca. one man went on a rampage one day and attacked eleven people with an ordinary Hammer, which most people have in their home. Should it be deemed to purge the Public of Hammers, that Hammer could be conveniently dubbed an "Assault Weapon" and you would perhaps quite unwittingly, be branded a Suspect should the Media develop a strong dislike for Hammers, most likely in Response to lobbyiing from the Carpenter's Union.Nailed it!?
I hope that you have no interest in Firearms at least recognize from reading this that Firearms are essentially not Blameworthy as they are incapable of entertaining Motive or Intent, as some would by clever manipulation of our vocabulary would change to suit their own purposes.
