I didn't know Chong Sook other than who she was. But here is a story......Our first new home (on Amelia Ave.) backed up to Mr. Wilson's big horse pasture that adjoined Indian School Rd from about 34th to 35th St. and stretched quite a bit South. As you see above, Chong Sook was adopted by Mr. Wilson. I don't know the story nor did I know her other than to share waves through my backyard fence. What I do know is that she had a very warm (symbiotic??) relationship with the horses that roamed the pasture and would call them with a high pitched "Yowp-yowp!" and they would come running. Most of the time that was their dinner bell as near as I could tell. I would mimic that "yowp!" as best as I could and would play hide and seek with the horses in the field and they would "look for me". Yep....I climbed the fence and went out where I probably shouldn't have. There were lots of high brush/bushes that made what I thought were good hiding places. I think her horses just played along. This was all pre-high school in the Monte Vista Elementary School days.
As you can see, she was a bit older than us, but I have a feeling she was a genuinely nice person. Anyone with a relationship with animals like she had is OK in my book. I don't know why I am memorializing my "interaction" with Chong Sook. Maybe I'm just missing people who were part of my youth who have passed on. Too many.
RIP Chong Sook. I'll bet you have your horses with you now.
