On July 17, 2024, our friend...my friend Matt Carey passed away. I was friends with Matt through High school and the 70's but then lost contact. I understand there will not be a service. My recommendation if you want to....make a donation in his name to Folds of Honor or another organization that honors those who served in the military.
I may have the chronology a bit wrong, but Matt married his childhood sweetheart, Sandi O'Clair early after graduation I think, and then....he joined the Navy to serve his country. All I remember is that he was on a supply ship off Vietnam. He was Best Man at my wedding in 1968. Matt was not married at the time of his death.
Matt had two sons...Frank Matthew Carey, Jr. and Rick Carey. Matt Jr. passed away in 2021.
Matt is survived by his son Rick and his sister, Diana Thomas and her husband John Thomas and sisters Donna Politz and Debbie Silver. Some may remember Diana and some may remember "Mr." Thomas who taught American History one year at Camelback in school year 64/65.
Matt was always full of "piss and vinegar" as my Dad would say....always BOLD! He loved '57 Chevys and he had one at the same time Randy Cofer and I each had one. The difference was that Matt knew how to work on them.
He spent his working life as an electrician like his Dad and worked for a time at the Palo Verde Nuclear Plant during construction phase.
I could tell you some stories about our times at his family cabin in Happy Jack and here's one. We were fishing down...way down... in Clear Creek (I think) sometime in 1970 and a big rainstorm started. After done fishing, we were on foot scrambling up a very steep and wet hillside when the ground gave way under me and I was sliding rapidly down the hill....right to Matt's hand. He probably saved me from serious injury or maybe worse. He just snorted. That was Matt. BOLD.
Fair winds and following seas. Rest in Peace my old friend.
