Sorry Frank to hear about the loss of your Mother. Speaking of being a Child of the Depression, Jackie Gleason, who was a man trying to survive during the Deptession, was originally an Opera Singer, and rather thin, but with the struggles he went through in the Depression partly because no one had money to hire Singers, opera or othewise, he looked at opportunities an decided to gain weight and be a Comedian. It worked for him, so far, not for me. He was very paranoid about money as it sounds like your Mother may have been, so Jackie Gleason, even after he made a Fortune, used to rent Boxes in Bus Stations and squirrel away money in each Box, for a Rainy or a Dusty or Foodless day. This he wrote about in his own Autobiography called "The Golden Ham". The Far Side by Gary Larson has a Cartoon which is very Funny at least in my opinion, it is of the two Astronauts landing on the Moon, and the one is still descending on the Ladder, and the other Astronaut is in the Forefront, standing on the Moon's Surface, and staring down at a Woman in one of those big full skirted Gingham Dresses, her hairi in Pogtails, big wide open eyes with stars in them, holding a Rolling Pen and wearing an Apron like women used to wear when they were cooking, and the Astronaut is looking over his shoulder half way, and telling the other Astronaut descending the Ladder "It must be Alice Cramden" Of course you remember the old Black and White TV Series "The Honeymooners' with Jackie Gleason as Ralph Cramden, who when he became upset with Alice, he would clench his Fist and hit it saying "To the Moon Alice, to the Moon"
I have been waiting for years to work this Cartoon into a Discussion here on the Forum, and I have you to thank Frank for the opportunity. Thanks Pal.
