Wayne was my best friend and neighbor who had a charm and whit about him. Wayne was the one guy that the coaches would come up to and ask him to go out for football. I was walking with him and JD Jones one day to school and were talking and I walked right into a sign post we laughed about it all the time. He was a great dad who loved his girls very much. He was a testament to his faith in god and the good thing is he is with him now. How I miss you buddy.
I remember Wayne from grade school at Madison #2. He was my main competition in the 100 yard dash! Dennis Oellers (my best bud) and I were pretty fast and when Wayne wasn't in the race, it was a toss up between which one of us would come in 1st place. When Wayne was in the race it was a different story! Dennis and I would take him out of the blocks and keep the lead for maybe 50 to 60 yards when Wayne would fly past us like he had an afterburner in his shorts! We could never beat him! I have never seen a grade school kid with muscles like Wayne had...dang, that guy could run!
The last time I saw him was in Los Angeles in the late 60's when I happened to run into him in a restaurant. Small world! He sure was a nice fellow. Very well mannered and a humble and gentle soul. Never met anybody who didn't like him. God bless his soul!
In the early 1970s I worked as a carpenter and had the privledge of working with Wayne on a construction job. He was a real craftsman from whom I learned a lot about the craft and the discipline it takes to be good at it. He was a true gentleman and gentle spirit. My experience with him made me wish I had gotten to know him better at Madison #2 and at Camelback.
